Roads To Resources in Mountain Bikes Shopping Directory

In 1979 the Canadian government completed construction of the Dempster Highway from Dawson City, Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories. This highway was the product of former Prime Minister John Diefenbakers Roads to Resources policy. Although the Dempster is a utilitarian highway originally built to permit access to vast oil reserves in the Beaufort Sea, it also passes through some of the most unique and beautiful regions in the country. In the winter of 1999, our team commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Dempster Highway by cycling unsupported along its entire length. Beyond the Dempster, we traveled on an ice road along the MacKenzie River Delta, completing the trip in the remote community of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.
